Why?

Much of our artwork hangs on our walls and the walls of a few close friends. We thought that keeping it somewhere more public might be a good idea. So here is that more public place....

This is the second year in a row with an urban theme for Christmas. Despite the proximity to others in this small "big city" it is easy to feel disconnected from and forget about those outside our caste whom we pass every day but rarely see. I find the images of poverty and homelessness butted up against the wealth and power in this town quite striking.

For this card I went back to oil applied on canvas with knives. I love the rawness of thick, partially mixed paint on the canvas, but have yet to figure out the best way to convey that sense onto a card.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the inspiration for this card were the squatters who live in tents under I-395 running south of the heart of downtown DC.
These homeless people are living hundreds of yards from beautiful townhomes and the heart of our government.
I think of the tent as something which belongs in a beautiful setting up in the mountains, but here it is used as a symbol or poverty and inequality.

This scene is not quite photo realistic. The elements all exist and you could see all them in our neighborhood. I took a little license to rearrange them for better design of the painting.
I especially like the interstate as a device of disconnection. We get in our cars and can become detached from what is around us. The interstate in this painting divides the haves from the have nots.

The color in here is not quite what I wanted. The colors on the canvas are quite brilliant. The electronic version turned more green than I wanted.
I worked hard on the use of value in this painting. I really like the scene in the 2004 card, but the value in there makes the entire foreground get lost. I wanted to make the monument, the row homes, and the tent jump out. They should be the three main design elements. I used the angles of the interstate to relate the three major elements together. Hopefully it worked.

Chuck - beautiful. Just received your card in the mail and you're right, the card doesn't do the piece justice. I can get a little more of the design elements from the website but I imagine the actual piece to be quite stunning with the texture and bright colors. Who knew you had such creative talents? You can really see your creative and artistic progress on this website as the years have passed. One of my favorites however is clouded plains. Could be biased based on my youth and now return to Northeastern Colorado where I believe you've captured the colors of the Colorado sky perfectly for a late afternoon. Chris Mills
