Why?

Much of our artwork hangs on our walls and the walls of a few close friends. We thought that keeping it somewhere more public might be a good idea. So here is that more public place....

This was a fun painting to make. I really liked the contrast with the silhouettes of the trees against the fading twilight. This painting was a real pain to try and reproduce. The image is very dark, but the paint has a sheen on it. Taking a photograph required additional light, but any additional light made the dark portions of the image shine, which was not what I wanted to happen. I think the final photograph was taken outside, in the shade.

This year’s design is a slight departure from my norm. I tried to use flatter strokes and more solid colors, as opposed to the multi-colored bold brush strokes that I feel more comfortable with. I was going for an almost woodblock print type feel. I think this image would make an interesting woodblock – someday.
This image comes from a mid-September campfire that I shared with my father up in the Trinity Lakes region of the Idaho Rockies. It was very crisp and cool, and at just the right time of night the trees blend together into one silhouette as the stars begin to come out. It is dark and cold, except for the campfire just out of the bottom of the image.
I have always been fascinated by campfire embers. They seem to jump and play as they shoot up to the sky. These embers are dancing in my stylized version of the Japanese (Hiragana) word wahei, which translates to “peace”.
